James Milner has chosen to go to Brighton's shirt n ° 20 for the new season as a personal tribute to his former Liverpool Diogo Jota teammate, who tragically died last month.

The 28 -year -old Portugal International died in a car accident in June alongside his brother, Andre Silva, just a few weeks after helping Liverpool get the title of Premier League.

In response to his death, Liverpool confirmed that JOTA's emblematic n ° 20 shirt – carried throughout her five -year fate in Anfield – would be permanently withdrawn.

Three of these seasons were passed with Milner before the departure of the English midfielder experienced for Brighton in 2023.

Before the 2025-2010 campaign, Brighton's teammate, Carlos Baleba, decided to take shirt n ° 17, leaving 20 available.

Milner, who previously brought n ° 6 since his arrival on the south coast, has seen a chance to make a gesture of respect.

“Once I heard that Carlos sought to change his number and that 20 were available, I wanted to do it as a brand of respect and pay tribute to Diogo Jota,” said Milner in a message published on Brighton's X.

“He was an incredible player with whom I had the chance to play and a great friend too.

“It will be a great honor to wear your first League number this year.”

The veteran midfielder, whose contract was renewed by Brighton in June and now takes place beyond his 40th anniversary, was one of the many former teammates who went to Portugal in July to attend the funeral of Jota.

The death of Jota has left a sustainable brand on the world of football, causing several tributes. #

Liverpool has already revealed plans to erect a commemorative statue of the attacker in Anfield, while the wolves inducted him in their fame.

Clubs and fans across the country also paid tribute to moments of silence and commemorative banners.
