New study links celebrity worship to narcissism, materialism, and perceived similarity

Published a new study in the International Psychology magazine Find that people who are celebrities that are the celebrities to score higher in both materialist values and narcissistic traits – especially a more unsafe and emotional sensitive form of Narcissism. The study also found that people who see themselves as equal to their favorite celebrity are more likely to be these attitudes. Among all factors examined, feel equal to a celebrity was one of the strongest predictors of famous worship.
In the past two decades, Psychologists are increasingly interested in the influence of Celebrity, especially as social media the expense of people's expense. As a platforms such as Instagram, tappique, and YouTube make it easier and follow the lives, how this one-sided relationships, known as the parasocial interactions, the self-restraint of people are made and social values.
One of the tool often uses in this study, the scale of celebrity attitude, which evaluates how strong a person is recorded with a celebrity. This scale ranges from the low levels of admiration – like following a famous work for entertainment and potential and objection and even on the release to do illegal things for them. The new study targeted how this kind of admiration relates to narcissism to call, and whether people who feel people who are more likely to be affected likely.
To investigate these questions, recruited the researchers 215 undergraduate students from a university in the southeastern United States. Participants were mostly women, with a wide range of racial and ethnic backgrounds. Each student completed a battery of questionnaires that measures their attitude to celebrities, materialistic values, and narcissistic traits. She also answered newly created questions that assessed, how similar to her favorite celebrity in terms of personality, appearance, appearance, as a lifestyle.
Corrested worship was assessed with the famous attitude scale, which includes Absalia for Social and entertainment, emotional attachment, and Obsic thoughts and behavior. Materialism was measured with a scale that examined how many people placing on the possession of things, how important belongings are to their identity, and if they believe that they feel happier. Narcissism was measured in two forms: Grandiis Narcissism (which is characterized by confidence, entrying, entrusted narcissism (involving hypersensitivity, and a preoccupation with self image).
The results showed a consistent relationship between renown to worship and materialism. People who scored higher about fame also inclined to place greater importance on money, status and belongings. This was especially true for those who report more intense or obsike admiration for celebrities. The researchers notices that this connection is refresenting with the past and suggests people can turn to both fierced as a ways to handle emotional insecurity or low self-esteem.
When it came to Narcissism, the finds were Nuans. Only the vulnerable form of narcissism was significantly related to famous worship. Higher levels of emotional insecurity and self-focus were more likely to feel strongly connected to fame. Grandiose narcissism, which is associated with charm and assertiveness, not showing important relationship with admiration in this sample. These contrasts with some previous studies, but match other recent work suggest that vulnerable narcissism can be relevant to parasocation attachments.
Both types of narcissism were linked to materialism, although in different ways. People with grandiy traits were more likely to appreciate possessions for the status and prestige they showed with fragile traits stronger intercourse with material goods or safer. The researchers pointed out that although the motivations differently, appear both forms of narcissism appear to be appropriate to a focus on possessions.
One of the most important findings from the study was the role of perceived celebrities agreement. Participants they were believed as their favorite celebrity – or in appearance, behavior, or personality – were more likely to score higher on measures of the worship. This connection himself held at control of materialism and narcissism. Actually perceived equally arrived as one of the strongest predictors of the famous worships. It also had a modest relationship with materialism, especially if participants believed their agreements related to success or status.
These findings support previously research for suggest that people often imitate celebrities they admire or believe them seemed. For example, last studies found that fans of artists as Elvis Presley not only adopted and values, but also reported deeply associated with his identity.
Other studies have shown that young people who see more mediak stop and compare themselves with celebrities are more likely to be adapted. The current study adds to this body of work by providing new evidence that is similar to a celebrity – either because of shared traits or via parasion of parasion ties.
The study investigants Statistics models to test whether other factors predicted predicts predicted and predicted materialism when they regarded together. When all variables were included in the analysis, stood vulnerable narcissism and perceived as the only significant predictors of famous worship. For materialism predicted both jokes and vulnerable narcissism higher scores, with vulnerable narcissism with a stronger effect.
There are some limitations. The sample was drawn from one university and was mostly composed of young women, who limits the generalization of the results. Future survey may include more diverse groups about age, gender, and cultural backgrounds. It would also be useful to explore how the perception of correct people are for celebrities that are actually change, and whether the perception change in the course of time or admission.
The researchers also suggested that future studies can explore the direction of these relationships. It is not yet clear whether people are drawn to fame they feel equally right, or when they start to see themselves or equal to emotionally attached. Another promise direction would be to investigate collective narcissism – how people can reflect people for celebrities in a shared group identity, such as nationality, gender, or race.
