Maresca dit Chelsea hunting for the new defender after Colwill's injury
Enzo Maresca urged Chelsea to sign a new defender after Levi Colwill's long -term injury.
The English international has undergone an LCA tear and should miss most of the 2025-26 season.
Although the blues have many players in books, the head coach has publicly said that he would like a new face through the door to cover his missing central defender.
Speaking at her pre-match press conference, Maresca said: “We know how important Levi was for us last season and the way we want to play.
“We are able to create chances of attack if we can build in the right way and Levi was a large part. Now it has come out and we will try to find a different solution.
“We are trying to find an internal solution, but the club knows exactly what I think – we need a central defender – but we are looking internally.”
“When we build, we build with Levi in the middle. Last year, we played 64 games and we played 64 games with Levi and Tosin [Adarabioyo]. Now Levi has come out, the only one who can do this job is Tosin.
“We have the Premier League and the Champions League. This kind of players, the rest can adapt. We have [Jorrel] Hato but he never played like the guy in the middle last season. These are not the central defenders. Yes, he is a central defender, but what should he do? Can he do that? It's different.
“We also have Benoit [Badishille] and Wes [Fofana] Who have problems, and that is why the club knows exactly what I think of central defenders. »»
Chelsea is launching their home campaign at Crystal Palace on Sunday, while they are trying to rely on their triumph of the Club World Cup this summer.
