Williams, 45, appeared in his first Grand Colem tournament in two years after making a return after 16 months of the tour.
She participated in an event in a mixed star double last week, then in single Monday evening – both also via generic invitations from the US Tennis Association.
Williams was the oldest player to participate in female singles here since Renee Richards in 1981 and the third older in the open era.
She had a draw against the 11th seeded Karolina Muchova, semi-finalist last year, But made life very uncomfortable for the Czech before finally falling to a 6-3 6-1 defeat 6-3-1.
Despite the defeat, Williams was delighted to be back in court after drawing injuries and illnesses.
The American underwent surgery for uterine fibroids last year and spoke following its three sets to be relieved to be painless.
“What did I prove myself?” Said Williams. “I think that for me, coming back to the field is to give me a chance to play more healthy. When you play unhealthy, it's in your mind. This is not only what you feel. You are also stuck in your mind. So, it was pleasant to be freer.”
In addition to his seven single home trophies, Williams won 14 major female double titles, next to her younger sister, Serena.
Two of these victories occurred in New York in 1999 and 2009.
They played together for the last time at the US Open in 2022, the year Serena played her last match in single there.
