Hours after Nebraska contract extension, Matt Rhule is 100% realistic about Brian Kelly's future in college football
After four years at LSUhead coach Brian Kelly was fired following a humiliating loss to Texas A&M in Week 9 of college football. This is a milestone for the program, especially with four more games remaining to conclude the campaign. Kelly's tenure at the university was mired in controversy and widespread criticism.
He managed to post a combined record of 34-14 and 19-10 in conference play. He struggled to lead the team to the playoffs and, most importantly, failed to satisfy passionate LSU fans who yearned for success similar to that of 2019 when Ed Orgeron was the head coach.
Even though Kelly lost his job, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule says Kelly will land a new job soon.

He highlighted Kelly's past records and his caliber in putting together formidable rosters. Rhule mentioned that this year is a dream season to coach prospects with multiple openings in the SEC and Big Ten.
“If he wants to, he will get a job again this year because it will be a record year in terms of the number of open jobs and accomplished candidates,” Rhule said Thursday, according to On3.

“You have a guy in Coach Kelly who played for a national championship. So if it wasn't good at LSU, then there's going to be another place that's a good fit for him.
“James Franklin made it to the semifinals last year. It wasn't good at Penn State. It would be good for him elsewhere. And Billy Napier won at a very high level. He won his last match in Florida,” he added.
Matt Rhule finally puts LSU coaching job rumors to rest
Among potential candidates to replace Coach Kelly at Louisiana State, Nebraska HC was consistently linked to the top job. Even though he ignored such rumors, experts predicted possible discussions behind the doors. However, the Cornhuskers appear to have retained their coach for a few more years.
On Thursday, Coach Rhule was offered a contract extension for two more years. This will keep him through the 2032 season and officially end the rumors surrounding his potential departure.
This decision came at a very crucial time, especially when Rhule had a stable contract. To wait for Nebraska conclude the 2025 season with at least 10 wins under coach Rhule
