Man Utd 'deserved more' in Spurs draw, says goalscorer De Ligt
Matthijs De Ligt said Manchester United “deserved more” from him. 2-2 draw against Tottenham after the defender saved a point for his side in north London.
Spurs looked to be heading for a dramatic victory after late goals from Mathys Tel and Richarlison, but the Dutch centre-back headed in the equalizer in the sixth minute of injury time to ensure the match ended tied.
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half and dominated much of the match, leaving De Ligt still frustrated with a point despite avoiding a first defeat in four games.
Speaking to TNT Sports, De Ligt said: “Luckily we got a point, I think we deserved more from the way we played, I felt in the second half we were a bit tired. We didn't have a chance to come out of our half.
“Their first goal was a bit lucky, I'm a bit upset about it, but I'm proud of the way the team fought and got a point in a difficult stadium.”
De Ligt: Spurs and Forest draws show progress
United are now five games unbeaten with three wins during this run as they finally seem to be clicking under Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils also came from late to draw 2-2 against Nottingham Forest last weekend and De Ligt felt both games showed a sign of progress despite lacking wins.
He added: “Last year we lost to Nottingham Forest and Tottenham 1-0, but last week and today, you see, we have the fire in our belly to fight and get a point.
“The season is long, drawing is more important than losing.
“You saw today that we are really dangerous, we have a lot of speed up front, we are really stable, we know our strengths and use them.
“Today we had more chances to get behind them because they are vulnerable, we played a good game and I think we deserved a little more.”
Substitute Tel thought he had played his part in a stunning comeback victory when he turned inside the box and fired into the top corner, but conceded a point, having looked for much of the match as if they were heading for a fourth consecutive home defeat.
He told BBC Sport: “It's football. Sometimes 50-50, sometimes something else. I want to stay positive because the reaction in the second half was really good. We showed great mentality.
“In the first half we tried things. We were very patient. We lost two points. We got one but we deserved to win this game. Like I said, we have to stay positive and keep going. Work hard every day.”
