Crystal Palace face the Finnish team KuPS in a UEFA Conference League match at Selhurst Park this Thursday.

Crystal Palace currently sit 9th in the Conference League, a somewhat disappointing position considering their Premier League form. KuPS, for its part, is 25th, but is only three points behind its opponents.

  • Unsurprisingly, Crystal Palace have never faced KuPS before. In fact, KuPS have never faced English opponents during their rare forays into European competition, dating back to the 1960s.
  • Crystal Palace are coming off just their fourth Premier League defeat of the season, after being beaten by Manchester City 0-3 at Selhurst Park on Sunday. The game was disappointing for Oliver Glasner's team, as they took twice as many shots as their opponents and hit the woodwork twice.
  • In European competition, Palace last beat Irish side Shelbourne with relative ease, but they have suffered two defeats in the Conference League, most notably at home to Cypriot side AEK Larnaca in October.
  • KuPS actually suffered just one defeat in the Conference League, coming against Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok in week four. It's fair to say, however, that after facing teams from Kosovo, Iceland, Slovakia and Switzerland, the Finnish team has yet to face anyone as good as Crystal Palace.
  • Although Crystal Palace have had a good start to the season, it is worth noting that they have not been invulnerable at home, having lost six times in all competitions so far – and three of those defeats came at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace's thin squad in general could end up giving them trouble later in the season, particularly if injuries end up biting.

For now, however, Oliver Glasner essentially has a complete squad to choose from and despite losing to Manchester City, they were still largely impressive.

KuPS are clearly not a terrible team – they won their domestic championship, which ended in October, for example – but nothing they have done in the Conference League so far suggests they can push Palace here.
