Bob Wier– the founder of the iconic rock band, Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78.

The death of the singer was announced on Saturday in a explanation shared to his Instagram page.

The emotional post marked Bob as a “guiding force whose unique artistry reshaped American music.”

The explanation read: “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Bobby Weir,” read the statement, accompanied by a photo of the musician on stage.

“He passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Sadly, he succumbed to underlying lung problems.”

“His work did more than fill rooms with music; it was warm sunlight that filled the soul, building a community, a language and a sense of family that generations of fans carry with them,” it continued.

The statement noted that Weir was diagnosed with cancer in July, and began treatment “just weeks before returning to his hometown for a three-night celebration of 60 years of music in Golden Gate Park.”

“An artist who even then chooses to continue by his own design,” the statement added.

The post closed with the hope that Weir's legacy will “live on through future generations of Dead Heads.” And so we send him off the way he sent so many of us on our way: with a farewell that is not an end, but a blessing. A reward for a life's worth.'

Who did Bob Weir leave behind?

According to the statement, Bob left behind his “loving family, Natascha, Monet and Chloe”.

Weir and Natascha Münter were married on July 15, 1999 in Mill Valley, California.

The adoring family requested privacy to grieve during this emotional time and shared their “gratitude for the outpouring of love, support and remembrance.”

“May we honor him not only in grief, but in how bravely we carry on with open hearts, steady steps, and the music that leads us home. Hang in there and see what tomorrow brings,” she concluded.

Bob joined the Grateful Dead, originally called the Warlocks, in 1965 in San Francisco at the age of 17.

Drummer Bill Kreutzmann is now the only remaining original member.

Founding bassist Phil Lesh died in 2024.
