College football insider Pete Thamel commented on quarterback Trinidad Chambliss' battle for another year of college eligibility. Chambliss had his request for a sixth-year eligibility waiver from the NCAA denied last week.

Ole Miss previously filed a waiver request in November, after which the NCAA issued a verbal denial in December. However, Chambliss and the Rebels are not giving up easily, as the quarterback's lawyer, Tom Mars, revealed his intention to challenge the NCAA's decision.

Depending on the outcome of this plan, Chambliss could be on his way to the NFL or return to Oxford for another season. Thamel looked at the possibilities at quarterback no matter where he ends up between the draft and another season of college football.

Thamel appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday to discuss the Trinidad Chambliss situation, noting that the quarterback is at a crossroads. Analyzing the Chambliss stock project, Thamel said:

“Chambliss is a fascinating draft case, Pat, if you look at him. … He's still like a third or fourth round pick. … There are probably seven teams that really need quarterbacks right now that would draft him this year, and it's hard to find seven viable quarterbacks that could be NFL starters in this draft class, especially with Dante Moore remaining.”

Pete Thamel skeptical about Trinidad Chambliss stock draft with extra year

Thamel then explained that Chambliss' stock would likely decrease with an additional year in college, given the particulars of the class of 2027. He said:

“It's an interesting crossroads for Chambliss because he would definitely make more money in college next year than he would in the NFL next year. And if he had another season like the one he had… you would think maybe he's in a good position for the '27 draft, but the '27 draft could be historically loaded with quarterbacks. You have Arch, you have Dante Moore, and there's a huge flurry of them others. … So it would be interesting for Chambliss.

There is enormous optimism about Trinidad Chambliss' chances, with ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit expressing confidence in his lawyer, Tom Mars. He said:

“His attorney, Tom Mars, is very optimistic that he will be able to give him that extra year.”

Thamel also noted that the case would be brought before a court in Mississippi, where Mars is confident of its chances. He said:

“Ultimately, it will depend on an appeal from the NCAA or the Mississippi courts, which Tom Mars said would be a more level playing field for the Rebels.”
