England captain Harry Brook said his team had been “challenged” in “many different departments” after losing to Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the first one-day international in Colombo.

Kusal Mendis scored 93 as England were made for 272 at the R Premadasa Stadium, where Ben Duckett responded with 62 and Joe Root posted 61 to give Brook's side hope.

Brook's was one of eight wickets to lose 84 runs, with Jamie Overton's removal in a final chase of 20 condemning his side to an 11th consecutive away ODI defeat.

“We played very well in the middle and the spinners played exceptionally well,” Brook told TNT Sports, after watching Adil Rashid record 3-44.

“They gave us a hand in that last game. They challenged us in a lot of different departments. Unfortunately, we lost a few wickets in quick succession and that always puts you behind.”

The three-match series continues in the same framework SATURDAY In England second match since their 4-1 series defeat in Australia.
