Celtic's hopes of closing the gap on Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership to three points have hit a snag after their trip to Aberdeen, which is to be shown live on Aerial sportswas postponed less than four hours before kickoff.

Martin O'Neill's side were due to travel to Pittodrie on Wednesday evening, but a 4pm pitch inspection by fourth official Greg Souter, following what the hosts called “prolonged rain over recent weeks”, revealed the pitch was too waterlogged for the match to take place.

An Aberdeen statement read: “Following an inspection by one of the match officials, he canceled the match in the interests of player safety.”

A new date for the match has not yet been announced.

The year got off to a wet start in Aberdeenshire, which recorded the wettest January since 2016 with 124mm of rainfall, more than double the monthly average.

Celtic had hoped to take advantage of leaders Hearts' mistake last night, after Derek McInnes' side were beaten 1-0 by St Mirren.
