Amy Andrew continues extraordinary comeback – two kids, no sleep and 'carnage' as she boxes on the same bill as her husband | Boxing News
“I’m not sleeping.” Two young children would do that to any parent. But also consider this by training for a boxing match, promoting your first show, and making a bit of boxing history by competing alongside your husband in the same event.
That's the task facing Amy Andrew, the undefeated former Commonwealth featherweight champion. On Friday, she will have her second fight since the birth of her second child just six months ago.
Andrew and his husband Numan Hussain are based at their gym Rival Boxing in Kings Cross. They will box on the same poster, promoted by Andrew, in Spain.
“No married couple has ever boxed on the same show,” Andrew said. Aerial sports. “It's carnage. As politely as possible, Numan is a difficult man when he makes weight and trains and I am a difficult woman when I make weight and trains.
“It's an incredible opportunity. We're both really trying to progress in our careers and this gives us a platform to really be able to promote ourselves and win the fights we need to elevate our careers.
“So we decided to go for it and it’s absolute carnage.”
For Andrew herself to return to professional boxing so soon after having her second child is remarkable.
“I was injured, then I got pregnant and I was out for 20 months,” she said. “After I had my daughter, I was back in the gym that same week. I felt great physically. I just couldn't wait to get back to the gym.
“While most people would decide that having two kids was probably a good time to put on your boxing boots or whatever, I just feel like I have more to give to the sport.”
Andrew was an excellent amateur boxer and is aiming for professional rematches with some of his old rivals.
“I feel like I'm almost where I want to be. There's a lot of people that I've beaten or had close fights with that I think would make really good fights: Raven Chapman, Skye Nicolson, Karriss Artingstall, people like that. Shannon Courtenay, I've boxed and beaten her,” she said.
“I beat Raven in the ABA finals and Karriss and Skye beat me, but only just. Tysie [Gallagher] I beat her in the amateurs so that would be a good fight too. People who do things, I would love to have the opportunity to fight them because I believe I'm at that level. »
But she added: “I feel like I have more to give to the sport but the hardest part is sleep.
“The aggressive sleeping situation is definitely what makes it difficult. But I also feel lucky to be in a position where I can do what I love and it doesn't seem to affect my boxing.”
