Rory McIlroy is second, but six shots behind leader Jacob Bridgeman heading into the final round of the Genesis Invitational on Sunday.

McIlroy is aiming for a first title of the season at Riviera Country Club and although he sits in second place after the third round, he has a lot of ground to make up on Bridgeman.

After shooting 69 with three birdies and a bogey, McIlroy finished at 13 under par after Saturday's action. But it was Bridgeman who controlled the rankings.

Even with a missed birdie chance on the 18th hole, Bridgeman shot 64 to close his third round at 19 under par and a sizable lead.

“It was so hard, the greens got so fast, they're soft and they get a little bumpy later in the day,” McIlroy said afterward.

“I was proud of myself. I kind of held on. I stayed as patient as I could. I wish I was a little closer to the leader.

“I gave myself a chance. That's all I can ask for. It's not as big a chance as I think I would like.

“I would love to win here,” he added. “I’m going to play my best tomorrow and we’ll see what happens.”

Xander Schauffele at 10 under was tied for fifth with Marco Penge one shot behind him.

Scottie Scheffler shot 66 in the third round to enter the final day at five under.
