The former president of Hibernian and president of the Scottish FA, Rod Petrie, died at the age of 69.

He joined the Easter Road board of directors in 1996, becoming managing director the following year and president in 2004.

Petrie, who left the club in 2019 after the American businessman Ron Gordon bought a majority participation, died at home Thursday after a long fight against cancer.

During his stay with Easter Road, the team reached five finals of the Scottish Cup, winning the 2016 trophy after a dramatic match against the Rangers.

The club also won the League Cup in 2007.

Petrie was elected president of the SFA in 2019 after serving with the association in various roles for over 20 years.

He left the role in 2020 on health fields and had previously been vice-president of the SFA under Campbell Ogilvie and Alan McRae as well as in the board of directors of the former Scottish Premier.

Hibs said: “The Hibernian FC is deeply saddened to learn the death of the former CEO and President Rod Petrie. Rest in Peace, Rod.”

The president of the Scottish FA, Mike Mulraney, also paid tribute to one of the longest administrators in Scottish football.

“First, on behalf of my board of directors and colleagues from the Scottish FA, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Rod's family at this difficult moment.

“I was fortunate to have shared many conference rooms with Rod in our time as office carriers and administrators. He brought passion to each debate and, like many chair players and colleagues have known over the years, he was a clever and incessant negotiator.

“In this regard, it has always been easier to have a cane in your team. No more than during the Pandemic Covid-19 when, even while quietly facing poor health, it remained firm in our collective goal to guarantee the survival of all member clubs during an unprecedented period of uncertainty.

“Rod was also a big company: someone with a sense of diabolical humor that cared passionately about the game. We will all miss.”
