England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton revealed the personal sorrow she transported throughout Euro 2025, sharing that her grandfather died only two days before the start of the tournament.

The 24-year-old Chelsea star played a central role in the success of the Lionesses, producing two crucial stops in the penalty shootout while England beat Spain 3-1 in the final after a 1-1 draw in an additional time.

His heroic display earned him the game player award and capped an out -of -competition campaign.

Monday, Hampton posted on Instagram with a photo of his green shirt from England, which had “grandfather” written inside the pass, and shared an emotional tribute.

“Dear grandfather. Two days before the biggest tournament in my life, you left.

“It still doesn't feel real. I kept thinking when I would call Nannie, I would hear your voice again, one of your jokes, or one of those little comments that you would make, which said everything without saying much.

“You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before you even know what this trip would look like. You were still there: watch, encourage, teach. You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life.

“I miss our cats. I miss you saying: “Only we, the athletes, understand”, always with a little sly smile as if you were something special. And you were. You have it.

“It breaks my heart that you could not see me going out for our country during my first major tournament. Something you've dreamed of for me, something we've talked about so many times. I wanted to see your face or hear your voice after the game recalling at home. I wanted to share this with you.

“But I know, basically, you were still there. I felt you with me. In the tunnel. On the ground. In difficult times. I heard you in my head when I needed strength. I hope I made you proud, grandfather.”
