Djed Spence opens to become the very first Muslim footballer in England

The call of Djed Spence to the England team of Thomas Tuchel for the playoffs of the September World Cup was a highlight of career in itself – but he also carried a huge meaning far beyond the field.

By winning his place in the team, the defender of Tottenham Hotspur became the first Muslim footballer openly to receive a senior male call in England. If he appears in one of the aircraft to come against Andorra or Serbia, Spence should make history as the first Muslim man to play for the three lions.

Talk to BBC Sport Regarding success, the 25 -year -old admitted that the moment was difficult to put into words.

“It's a blessing-it's just incredible. I don't really have the words,” he said. “I pray a lot, I give gratitude to God. In the most difficult moments of my life, the darkest moments, I always believed that God has always been by my side. It is a great thing for me, my faith.”

The Spence call complicates a remarkable reversal on the ground for the former right back of Middlesbrough, which was loaned by Spurs three times – in Rennes, Leeds and Genoa – before entering the first team last season and playing a key role in their triumph of the Europa League.

Now Spence says he wants to use his story as inspiration for others, while remaining focused on the simple fact of enjoying his football.

“I don't really feel the pressure for certain things. I just play football with a smile on my face, be happy and the rest will take care of you,” he said. “If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim children, any child of all faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it.”
