Ryder Cup 2025: Rory McILroy hits New York's crowd for “abusive” behavior while Europe was beating the United States | News Golf

Rory McILroy struck New York's crowd for “abusive” behavior in the fascinating victory of the Ryder Cup in Europe against the United States.
Europe retained a remarkable response from America on Sunday, but the event was dominated by a noisy crowd which caused additional security measures.
The wife of McILroy, Erica, had beer on her and the five-time major champion himself was subjected to personal insults, including an interpretation of “F *** You Rory” before the Quartets on Saturday which were encouraged by the MC with Bethpage Black, which resigned before Sunday's game.
“Listen, I don't think we should never accept this in golf course,” said McILroy, who was part of his sixth winning team from the Ryder Cup.
“I think golf should be held at a higher level than what has been seen there this week. Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons. He tends you the label. He teaches you to play according to the rules. He teaches you to respect people.
“Sometimes, this week, we have not seen this. So no, it should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup. But, we will make sure to tell our fans in Ireland in 2027 that what happened here is not acceptable. Come and support your team at home.”
McILroy responded to a heckling in his match on Saturday foursomes with Tommy Fleetwood by telling them to “close the F ***”, before drawing his approach nearby and securing the Birdie to give them a 3 and 2 victory against Harris English and Collin Morikawa.
There seemed to be a less hostile environment in simple Sunday, but McILroy thinks that a minority of the crowd was always “disrespectful” and “abusive”.
“I think if I was an American, I would be bored that people do not hear a lot of cries for Scottie [Scheffler]But I heard a lot of cries against myself. It's like supporting your players. This is the thing, “he added.
“Listen, it was a difficult week for all of us. But at the same time, we closed them with our performance and how we played, and we tried to – I collapsed several times because it happened to me several times, but we tried to manage everything that came with class and balance, and for the most part, I had the impression that we did.”
Beem: not the fans I know
A hostile crowd was expected at Bethpage Black during the construction, which European players have prepared.
The PGA of America added additional security throughout the weekend and the crowd was warned of consuming alcohol in a responsible manner.
Former American Golfer and Sky Sports“Rich Beem thinks that some spectators have crossed the line.
“We all knew what fans of New York looked like. We talked about it for many moons arriving and we got what we expected,” said Beem.
“It is a different crowd and a different city to play and how Europeans managed it were exceptional.
“To enter a hostile environment, they did it. I hope we can find a way to alleviate it, but we are all passion for this event. It is a good one.
“Rory McILroy and Shane Lowry were the biggest targets for American crowds.
“The only thing I don't like about the Ryder Cup in America [is the abuse from the crowd] Because these are not the fans I know.
“The people I know who love the game go to the Masters, the PGA championship. We do not see that at the masters. It's nice to see people have fun and become verbal but once you have crossed the line, go?! You are an adult.”
