West Ham vs Manchester United preview

West Ham were three games into a 10-match winless run when the Hammers drew 1-1 at Manchester United on December 4, but a 2-0 victory at Burnley on Saturday means Nuno Espirito Santo's side are now three points behind fourth-placed Nottingham Forest after three wins in four matches.

A greater attacking threat has been part of their revitalized survival bid, with a run of nine goals in four matches reflecting a significant improvement since they recorded two attempts on target at Old Trafford just over a month after Santo's arrival.

“We were able to put more players in the box and create more combinations in the final third,” observed the Portuguese.

“To score goals you have to put more bodies in the box and shoot. We challenge our boys to try things, challenge themselves and take risks, because with risks comes rewards.

“[United] have a different shape with a different manager and new ideas. They are talented all over the field.

“We look at a lot of things at United, but Bruno Fernandes is the one we need to pay attention to. He's a fantastic player.”

United are aiming for a fifth straight victory since Michael Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim on an interim basis on January 13, having beaten Tottenham 2-0 on Saturday for their third home win in that run.

A win at the London Stadium would put United third ahead of Aston Villa, who host struggling Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. GMT).

“They are very good in transition,” said Carrick, of the opponents he began his professional career with in 1997 and made his senior debut in 1999.

“They have very good attacking players. When they are in top form at home, they are a dangerous team. We absolutely have to be ready to deal with all that.

“There are still things to improve… trying to be better as a team, collectively, when we don’t have the ball.

“But in three or four weeks we’re not going to get everything fixed and all of a sudden we’re going to look perfect. [on Saturday] was important to us.
