After beating Nepal and Scotland either side of a defeat to the West Indies in the T20 World Cup, England's showdown with Italy on Monday looks like a must-win for both teams.

England will likely emerge with a clear win rate if they lose, while Italy can guarantee qualification by winning and then beating the West Indies.

“We haven't played our best cricket yet but we are in a strong position,” England captain Harry Brook said, via ESPN.

“World Cups don't always go smoothly. We'd rather not start great and finish great than start great and finish badly.”

Brook branded Tom Banton “brilliant” after his unbeaten 63 in the nervy win with 10 balls remaining against Scotland.

“I’m just glad we made it past the finish line,” Brook admitted. “We haven't had that perfect game yet. They've all been a little naughty so far.

“Hopefully we can have an easier match against Italy and play our best cricket that everyone knows and loves. We can put smiles on some faces at home and get through the group stage.”

Italy lost to Scotland by 73 runs, but achieved their first ever final victory on their tournament debut with a 10-wicket win over Nepal in their second match.

“We are underdogs every time we play, no matter who we play – whether it's Nepal, Scotland, England or West Indies,” says stand-in captain Harry Manenti.

“We will always be the underdogs, who we thrive on and love. If we are timid against the big guys, then we don't stand a chance.

“We really have to try and make them understand. We learned some lessons from the way Nepal played against England.

“They took the game against them and you saw that it's really interesting to watch, actually: when you put pressure on the favorite team, they tend not to play as well.”

England vs Italy: T20 World Cup predictions

England should win comfortably, but expect a fearless Italian team to recall the way they beat Nepal.

Brothers Justin and Anthony Mosca have shown they are capable of causing considerable problems, but England's batting depth thanks to Phil Salt, Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell and the bowling attack – including Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid – are formidable.
