Flick vows to return Barcelona to their best after title hopes hit stumbling block
Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick openly criticized his own team after Monday night's game. 2-1 defeat in Girona, admitting that the Catalan side are struggling to regain their form and confidence after conceding first place in La Liga against its rival Real Madrid.
The German coach refused to blame the officials' decisions and instead pointed the finger directly at his team's performance levels.
“I don't want to talk about the referee. Everyone saw the match,” he said.
“We defended very poorly, especially in transitions. We were not well placed and had difficulty resisting Girona's attacks. We needed more control and fewer mistakes. In the first half we had more chances, but we have to show our hunger to win these matches.”
The defeat follows another disappointing result against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey, increasing the pressure on a team who had already shown encouraging signs earlier in the campaign.
“After losing to Atletico, it was important to win today and everyone is disappointed,” he explained.
Despite the setback, Flick believes the team now has an opportunity to reset during a clear week on the training pitch.
“We're not doing well. We're not in a good moment,” he admitted. “Now we have a week to work, and this is what we are going to do. We will fight to come back in the coming weeks with a different mentality and a higher level. Train and play.”
