South Africa leapfrog UAE to maintain 100% record, although captain Markram not entirely satisfied
South Africa launched into the Super Eights at the T20 World Cup thanks to a comfortable six-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates this morning.
The Proteas had already qualified for the next stage but there was no slowing down as Aiden Markram's men maintained their 100 per cent record with a convincing performance in Delhi that proved too good for their associated opponents.
South Africa made four changes of their own and one of the new additions, Anrich Nortje, made a strong impression, taking two for 28 from his four overs as UAE were restricted to 122 for six.
Corbin Bosch was the pick of the bowlers, however, with three from 12, as the UAE struggled to make much of an impact once the opening partnership of 38 from 27 balls – between Aryansh Sharma and captain Muhammad Waseem – was broken.
Alishan Sharafu made a solid 45 but received little support.
South Africa's response was firm rather than dramatic, but there was never any risk that it would fail.
There were double-digit contributions from Markram, Quinton De Kock, Ryan Rickelton and Dewald Brevis as they headed home with 6.4 overs remaining.
Markram unhappy with South African efforts on the field
Markram said: “It was great to see the boys grab the opportunity with both hands. The bowling unit was really good in executing the plans. Today with a bit of rain and interesting weather it was a bit corny, probably a bit less bounce, it was good to be able to run in those conditions.”
Markram, however, is not entirely satisfied with his team's efforts, adding: “We let ourselves down, not at all up to the mark with our attitude and approach. A lesson to be learned. Luckily we have some time before the first Super Eight match, which is good for the group.”
